Step 3: Gaining Permission

After one has successfully set up the avionics of the aircraft, one must obtain permission from the tower to land.  As per Top Gun, the tower guys are busy sipping coffee.  Standard procedure will be to accelerate to maximum speed with the use of afterburners and buzz the tower as closely as possible with the tailhook down in order to alert the tower of your desire to land (and claim your Big Mac).

Do not listen to your radio.  Too many people talk on them anyway, and besides, they all use callsigns and numbers that are very easy to confuse.  After all,  a real pilot can only remember the callsign given to them by their frat brothers in college, usually after an event that involved numerous shots of Goldschlager, a '57 Chevy, and a very irritated marmoset.

Once you have alerted the tower of your desire to land, proceed to the next step.

Step 4:  Lining Up

While it may seem to some that the angled deck is the only way to land on a carrier, they are mistaken.  In fact, none of the early carriers had angled deck, and they were only introduced by greedy corporate flight-deck manufacturers in an effort to sell more flight-deck, thereby increasing profits for their bean-counting, suit-wearing CEOs that had no concern for anything besides their house in the Caribbean.

Since every Top Gun-listening aviator worth their salt doesn't take this crap from anyone, it is therefore desirable to follow the proud tradition of great World War 2 fighter pilots like John Wayne and Ronald Reagan (whom, being a distinguished war heroes in World War 2, both had carriers named after them), and do a straight-in landing.

To properly execute a straight in landing, fly over the carrier.   Look closely for the foamy white line extending from the REAR of the carrier.  This is called the "wake", because the aft end of the carrier is often used for funerals.  Now, closely follow the wake with your plane.  If, after a few minutes, the wake has become hard to see, then you have gone the wrong direction and must rectify this situation by flying in the opposite direction.
